Flinders Island Weather

Cities full of clouds get blown Away

People ask me “what’s the weather like - it must be pretty cold?” During the ‘rainbow season’, it’s actually magical but I quickly say: “we live in a temperate environment - that means we don’t have extreme cold, nor do we have extreme heat or humidity. If you want sweaty and hot weather, go north of the Tropic of Capricorn!” Our position is 40 Degrees South of the Equator and being surrounded by sea keeps us within an even temperature in the year.

Flinders Islanders live in a maritime environment. There’s clouds but there’s always sun too. Some days can lead into weeks of calm, serene, blue-sky days which are “not-too-hot and not- too-cold” as Goldilocks said. Other times, the Roaring Forties from the West, with no landfall since leaving South America; smash into our coastlines of white crescent beaches with fast crashing waves. Our rugged granite tors on mountain tops have racing cloud formations above and around them. We are a wild and untamed island on the east of the Bass Strait with a temperate climate. We are 6 degrees warmer in winter than Melbourne. And a lot cooler in summer. When you come to Flinders Island, bring a coat, a hat and a good pair of boots because at some point, you may very well need all three items.
